Hypothyroidism in dogs

Post by atlantic44 on May 4th 2008, 6:17 pm

My dog just got diagnosed with hypothyroidism. He has started taking medication, so his symptoms should start to get better in a few weeks. He started losing hair in his loin area a few weeks ago and the skin turned black, but the Vet says the hair should grow back. He had some aggression problems back in January and we did blood work at that time. Some of the tests came back slightly abnormal, but nothing definitive. Last week when he went in for his vaccinations, I have the Vet take another blood sample and this is the one that came back positive for hypothyroidsim.

Have any of you experienced this with your dogs? How does the medication affect them? I would like to know more. Thanks.

Sorry to hear about your dogs health problems but don't worry too much. The medication does work and the dogs hair will grow back.My sisters dog has the same thing and once she got her on the meds the dog is doing so much better, lots more energy and her coat has come back beautifully. Just make sure you get the regular blood work done to make sure the dosage doesn't need to be changed.

How is your dog doing? Are you noticing a difference with the medication?

Hi, my dog is doing very well on the medication. Thank you for asking. His hair is growing back. It is funny, on one side he has a perfectly shaped black heart, the way the hair is growing in. I don't know how long it will stay that way, I want my son to take a photo of it before the hair grows in completely! I don't see any side effects with the meds, though he looks a little heavier to me.
