grooming difficult dogs

Post by bailey on April 7th 2008, 9:46 pm

Hi! I had today one cocker spaniel almost 2 years old that went to groomer only twice prior coming to my place. He behaved terrible in the tub,on the table, did not allow me to touch his paws or dry him. After he bite few times I put a muzzle on him. That did not help much. I ended up with so many scraches all over my arms and neck. I could hardly finish shaving him. I planed to give him some style, but that was all that I could do even that I questioned for a moment if I could complete. I do not know if I should refuse to take him back if owner would like to book next appointment? What do you do with customers like that? I could probably do 3 other dogs for the time that I have spend on him. Not worth of money, time and stress (on my part but as well poor and a bit crazy dog)

Sorry for the delay in posting a reply.
If this dog took you the same amount of time as 3 good dogs I'd be telling them to find someone else!

I would tell them the truth, you can do three dogs in the time it takes to do him. So either raise the price to make it worth your while or tell them that they'll have to find another groomer. Sounds mean, but if makes perfect sense... I think anyway!

I am lucky where I work I can get help when I have a difficult dog. For a dog that takes extra time for what ever reason: matted, lots of undercoat, behavior or temperament, we will charge for our extra time. We have a price for each breed, also an hourly rate. The hourly rate can be divided into units (i.e. $40/1hr or 1unit=$10/15min) and we add a certain amount of units to a groom price where necessary. Why should a cocker that takes 1.5hrs be the same price as one that takes 3 hrs? It's not fair for you or the clients.
Also I think you should always be honest with your clients, communication is very important. You have to educate them too.

Thanks a lot to all of you. I did recomended to the owner to revisit previous groomer, because he said that nobody ever had any problem with grooming his dog. He came all a way from Oakville to Brampton (approx. 1/2 hour drive from my place)!!! I wander now why? I will be more than happy if I will never hear from that owner again.
