Dog bites

Post by atlantic44 on July 29th 2008, 7:37 pm

Well, it finally happened to me. I had my first serious bite from a dog. The strange thing is, this was the third time I had groomed this particular dog - a Scottie! I had heard they can be unpredictable and I have never groomed one before. This dog came from the SPCA shelter, I even groomed him for free the first time. I was trying to get a matt out of his beard. I wasn't tugging, just trying to find them to cut them out or use the slicker on it. There was no warning, no growling, body didn't tense up, nothing. Just a snarl and snap, right on my left pinkie. I cleaned it right away and banaged it, but I had to finish him (not his beard) and his brother, another rescue from the SPCA and Shih Tzu. He was the one I was worried about. He has really sore looking feet, they are all brown and the skin looks red. I can't touch his front lower legs or feet at all, I put a muzzle on him when I do these areas. I also had a long haired Shih Tzu to do after these two. I started taking anibiotics I have on hand, but I didn't think I needed stiches. However, by the next day, after doing two more dogs, my hand was throbbing. So I went to the walk-in clinic and the doctor prescribed stronger antibiotics and said it was too late to stitch my finger. He also gave me a Tetanus shot, because I couldn't remember the last time I had one.

I had a reaction to the Tetanus shot over the weekend, high fever, chills, headache, joint pain (at least I think it was from the shot). I also had to start preparing for some medical tests and had booked off yesterday, today and tomorrow. That worked out well to give my finger time to heal.

Then yesterday, we found out my mother-in-law passed away. We knew she was not doing well with lung cancer, but it still came as a shock. So, the last few days have been trying to say the least.

I'm back to grooming on Thursday, hope I'm ready for it!

Sorry you have had such a rough time lately. Yes those darn scotties can be unpredictable and they have some set of teeth on them.
Hope everything goes well with your tests and my sympathies for the loss of your mother-in-law. Even though it was sort of expected it is always a shock.
Take care of yourself and hope you have a better day on Thursday.
