wheatons!

Post by elizabeth on May 13th 2008, 5:38 pm

This is an 8 year old Wheaton that I do, his name is Kerry.. he's a very nice boy and his Dad is very nice as well.. I only get to groom him every four months or so. Dad is so good about grooming at home its ridiculous, comes in matt free every time! He's done in a C comb all over(I think.. it's either c or e)... I need to fix his tuck up and legs I think, they both need more length to look a little more balanced. Any tips will be appreciated, I'm still new to this and need all the help I can get.
kerry before...

kerry after!

Here's another wheaton I do on a regular basis.. his name is Clancy and he's 1.5 years old and a little crazy at times. Don't have a before pic, sorry! He's done in an E comb with scissored head which I think turned out too pointy, I fixed it last time I groomed him. This was the 2nd groom for him but 1st by me.

And one more for the road cause its cute! This is Alice, she loves the kennel... I leave it open and she stays in there. She's 11 years old.

I wish I could be of help, Elizabeth, but I have only ever done one Wheaten and she is a crazy puppy. The first two times I groomed her I was only able to give her a bath, she wouldn't let the clippers near her. The last time I was able to clip her one length all over, but I'm only going by the directions on NFTGT. Luckily, her owner doesn't want her in the "breed" style clip. The fall is trimmed off and the ears aren't shaved. Sorry, I don't have a photo.

However, I think your grooms look great! Your farther ahead on the style than I am Laughing

I've never done a breed style clip on one yet.. I would like to but no one wants it done around here. I don't think I could handle another wheaton puppy, the 1.5 year old one is crazy enough! I love how puppies look with no fall and shaved ears.. I've never seen a full grown one done this way but it would be interesting to see.

thanks for the comments! =)

I groom a lot of wheatons, some in breed trim with regular heads, some with teddy bear heads and some are done with a comb all over. I find most people don't want the fall either. I always forget to take pictures, but I will try and take some and post them. I think the dog you did looks great, the only suggestion I would make is to not take the comb all the way down to the feet. Try blending it down and then scissoring the bottom so that you don't have a tapered look to the leg. (hope that makes sense). I love grooming wheatons (I know I'm nuts).

yeah you're definately right about that... I was thinking about letting his legs grow out a bit so they were less tapered but his dad always says one length all over. I'm sure if I mentioned it he'd be all for it though. Do you do the front legs like pillars and the back scissor straight down from the bottom of the knee? Or does it still have a little definition? Thanks a lot =)

You're not the only one that loves grooming wheatons! I just did Alice again today cause I finally got her on a regular basis, she was coming every 3-4 months kinda matted, but now she's in every 2... and it was so great not to have to dematt a cranky dog.[/img]
