new baby & old dog... having some concerns

Post by thh20 on August 9th 2009, 9:53 am

We brought home our first born (a boy) 2 weeks ago. The cats have adjusted fine, but I'm a bit worried about the dog. She's 11 1/2 years old, and I can't tell if she's jealous or protective of the baby. Whenever he cries, she'll go lie in front of his crib, but will move when we go to tend to him. She seems reluctant to leave me, regardless of if I have the baby with me or not. She'll stay around the stroller when he's in it but doesn't like walking beside it.

She wanders around, panting, with her ears back, and doesn't listen to us like she used to. I've noticed she seems to be walking stiff, and I think her hips are bothering her. We're going to try to get her checked out by her vet a.s.a.p to rule out any health issues. I've been trying to fuss her up on a daily basis, to let her know we still love her and she's not being replaced, but I'm a bit worried about her state of mind... it's hard to spend some one-on-one time with her, because the baby requires SO much of my attention already...

What can I do? I'm an emotional wreck... Sad

First off congrats on the new baby Smile !!
As for your old dog she is probably just confused and trying to sort this new human out in her mind. It will take some time and some adjustments but it should be ok. Let her sniff the baby when you are holding her, and let her sniff everywhere so she understands what the noisy little bundle is. Also don't leave the dog and the baby alone until you are sure about them. You can also try having her lay down at your feet and giving her a special treat while you spend time, feed etc the new one. The stress of the situation may be making her tense up and therefore cause the stiffness that you are seeing. Try not to be stressed when the two are together and you should see the dog relax too.
