Frustrated By Some Home Groomers

Post by sk9klippery on January 7th 2009, 6:57 pm

NO OFFENSE to anyone who grooms out of there homes!!!!

I am frustrated by the amount of home groomers popping up in my neighborhood. In Whitby, grooming out of your house is not allowed by the town, unless you are properly zoned. What frustrates me is that the amount of people who are doing it and aren't getting in trouble for it. These so-called groomers, are charging a lot less than us and in this trying time (we are a GM town), it really hurts my bottom line. I do realize that yes this could be a good thing, clients always like to try new groomers out, but then realize that the grooming/service is just not the same as ours, so it can benefit me, the clients may appreciate us more. But....when push comes to shove, some may settle for a maybe not so well groomed dog if they can save $20. These groomers also, don't have to pay the taxes i do......grrrrr its so frustrating, the bylaw officers should really crack down on those that are doing this, in my area. I had to make sure that i was zoned properly before i opened up. And what really ticks me off is that the bylaw officer made me purchase a sign permit, even though my signs have been there for years!!!! Grrrrr........sorry if i have offended anyone, but i'm really ticked right now!!!

depending on the city there are different bylaws. In Brampton home grooming is allowed as long as your detached and have double parking. I don't charge any less then a groomer from a shop(I used to run my buisness at a shop), I am a registered buisness and do have to pay taxes just like you.

That is the way it should be costa, i don't have any issues for those of us that do things properly, its the ones that just put up signs everywhere etc. Its just frustrating that i went through the whole bylaw zoning thing and some people don't and get away with it.

I groom from home, but our property is zoned commercial. I have registered my business and have a professionally made sign at the end of my driveway. I have my taxes done by a professional and pay what she says I need to pay. My prices are based on what the shop charged where I trained. The only thing I don't take is GST/HST because I make under $30,000.00 a year. I don't believe home groomers should charge way less than the shops - it might make people think you aren't as good for one thing. We will be moving into the city. Some of my customers have asked me if I would do their dogs from my new home, I said no, because I probably won't be living in a properly zoned house. I don't want to get into trouble or cause trouble with new neighbours.
