Commission question?

Commission question?
Hello, any of you shop owners pay your groomers commission? If so do you take off taxes? Is it just straight commission and they are responsible for their own taxes? Do they get statutory holiday pay? What about vacation pay? If they get paid for statutory holiday pay, how do you base their pay? Everyday income would be different since on commission. I have never had a groomer before, just an assistant and she is leaving in May for maternity leave.
I have no help and I cannot find an assistant. I was thinking of hiring a groomer.
Do any of you pay your groomers by the hour?
I am booked up so much that I cannot work by myself. Sometimes I want to sell or close my shop becasue it is too busy, and I cannot take it anymore.
Thanks for listening.

Re: Commission question?
All of this depends on whether you will hire you groomer as an employee or as an independant contractor. There are very different rules and regulations for each. You can look up the differences between the two on the Canada Revenues website.
At my shop I have my groomer as an employee on commission and that works well for both of us.

Re: Commission question?
Hi, thank you very mcuh for the reply. So basically the groomer has tax taking off the commission. So when I pay the groomer for stat holidays, do I pay them the avarage daily commission they would make? Thanks again.
Is 50% a good pay?

Re: Commission question?
if you hire a groomer and pay hourly or commission you have to take the taxes off. The gouv. is getting very picky with this now. To be an independent contractor they have to make there own hours have there own clients etc...... which way to go depends on you, IMO, there is no other industry or company that would pay an employee 50, or even 65% of the gross amount of the dog. Salaries are always the biggest expense of a company but you are losing money when you pay commission and so many other things can go wrong. In our shop we are hourly and everyone is responsible for getting all the dogs done and everyone chips in where needed. We have a great team of employees that help each other and we have fun along the way.

Above is a link to the Canada Revenue's determination between an employee and an independent contractor. They are very specific.
