Hello from Innisfil Ont.

Post by Soggy Doggy Pet salon on September 15th 2008, 7:26 pm

Just wanted to say Hi. I have recently became a groomer, certified Dec 07 and converted half of our garage into a salon. So I did not start advertising til about Apr.
I have found that Sept has been slow up here as well, but I guess with Thanksgiving coming up everyone will want their dogs groomed.
Question: What do you do with a dog that gets stressed when he has his nails trimmed? It is a big fight every time.
He is my friends Spaniel and I have known him since she got him. He has obviously been clipped to short previously.

I won't do a dog's nails if they are really stressed, I suggest the owners take them to their vet. I have some dogs that I can groom, but I can't do their nails. However, I have purchased a Peticure, a dremel-type nail file. It works better on some dogs that don't like the nail clippers.

I have found that (around here anyway) in Cochrane, many people have taken to giving their dogs a tablet called "Pet Ease" about a half hour before being groomed. The dogs seem a little more relaxed.

Pixie Charm, I haven't heard of "Pet Ease", do you have any more information on it? I have refused, in the past, to groom dogs that need to be sedated. I work on my own don't have transportation to run a dog to the vet if they had a bad reaction to the medication.

They sell it at Pet Valu. (I have not tried it on my pets) but alot of people I know, swear by it. A friend of mine said that it has all natural ingredients and personally I have not seen any adverse reaction to it yet. I have heard of others giving their pets motion sickness tablets to calm them down, but I do not like the idea of that. I figure that if an animal is so afraid to be groomed, that there must be a reason and sometimes it is best to have the vet intervene, for the safety of both dog and groomer. As we all know, a terrified pet, can be a dangerous pet!
