Trimming long claws
What can you do with a dog that has long claws but the quik is at the end of the nail?

Hmmm.....carefully tip the nails, then reccomend that the dog get some excercise on the pavement to help wear them down. You could also try grinding the nail.

Reccomend that the dog gets his nails trimmed at least once a month, if not more often, because the quik can be "trained" to get shorter. I learned this from a Vet I used to work for years ago.

Re: Trimming long claws
This dog lives in a city and his walks are always on pavement, which surprised me because I thought the nails would shave themselves down also. The dew claws are the worst of course since they do not walk on them. I suggested that maybe if she would have them trimmed every couple of weeks, just a touch, so to encourage the quik to recede. Anybody have any tips on how to stop him from growling at his owner every time they get near his food dish? I worry about that since they have a young child in the house.

Just as a side note...
He's a husky/sheppard mix and only 10 months old.

Tell her to take the dog to a trainer (a good qualified one), call Bark Busters or watch Cesar Milan. That is an accident waiting to happen!!

Hi! Shona, it's neat that you should mention Cesar because early this morning (like 5:30 am) I just happened to catch him on animal planet and thought that it's a wonderful idea and I will tell her to seek professional help for him before it escalades into a serious incident. Other than around his food, he seems a very sweet pup and I would hate for something bad to come out of a situation that could be prevented! Thank you all for your tips, help, and advice!
