Long-coated dogs
I had a new client in yesterday. She has a Shih Tzu, 11 months old. She wants to keep the dog in a long coat, parted down the back and dropping to just under the belly. She also wants the eyebrows to grow long enough to put up into the ponytail. I have never groomed a dog like this before. Her coat was so fine, it just had all these fly-aways going every which way. I used an anti-static product on her, but she still looked fuzzy all over. I took my scissors and skimmed off as much of the fly-away hair as I could.
What do I need to do with this type of style? By the way, the owner still wanted the face really short between the eyes and the nose, and short legs ( I used a #5 blade on the legs). Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

You can try using "the stuff" as a rinse in the tub, you only need a very tiny amount. It has silicone in it so it will help with detangling as well. When you dry the dog make sure you blow the coat down to make it lay flater. Also when you are done and the hair is parted spray a little of "the stuff" on the dog and comb down the hair. Be very careful when using this product, don't get any on the floor unless you really enjoy slipping and ending up on your behind LOL.
And I have to ask, the owner wants to keep the hair long but gets the legs shaved off???

Re: Long-coated dogs
i used to groom a shihtzu in this style. It went against everything i would normally do....but thats what the owner wanted. She had a full coat parted down the back ,a full topknot and full ears and tail...BUT,i shaved from her elbow all of her front legs ,right along the turn of rib from between the front legs to the flank ,then down from the flank to the knee, across to the rump, and all the rest of the rear legs down, and also her chest from under the sternum...with a 7#(basically i shaved off where you would normally leave a pattern on a schnauzer, and the full top coat dropped over the shaved bits) Of coarse you could see the legs and feet a bit,but all considered ,it didnt look that bad.
As for the static, yes use a rinse to finish the bathing process ,and re-apply a light spray to finish the dogs coat in a part. Also at that age ,she has most likely just dropped out all her puppy coat, which would leave the top coat a bit thin and overworked ??

Thanks for the advice. Yes, the owner wanted the legs shaved down. Maybe in the warmer weather she will let the legs grow a bit longer. Right now, the snow just sticks to the hair, all my clients complain about the snowballs their dogs bring into the house. I will try putting a conditioner on the coat the next time too.
