Dogs with warts

Post by atlantic44 on March 6th 2008, 2:55 pm

I have a regular client who comes in with a 14 year-old female cocker spaniel every four weeks. That is great, except she must have 50 warts all over her body. She is also blind and can't hear. I'm having a really hard time trying to avoid the warts. I think I should suggest to the owner that she be groomed at a vets office, so that they can deal with any bleeding warts. What would you do. I like that fact that she comes in regularly, but I also get stressed because I'm afraid of hitting one of the warts by accident.

I run my hand along her skin before I clip and everytime I clip so I can feel where they are and then just lift the clipper up a bit so I don't hit it. I usually make notes on their cards about where they are, but in her case you may need a book to do that. Not much help, but that's what i've been doing! =)

ooh another thing would be to give her a longer clip, like a 1 comb all over. The combs aren't sharp at the ends and they're spaced further apart. Since she's in every four weeks she won't be getting in bad shape between groomings.

I also have a cocker like this, and I just feel along and go really slow. The owner is also VERY understanding about me knicking warts and has never made a fuss about it when it has happened. I do have a crazy shih tzu owner, and her dog at one itsy bitsy tiny wart on its hip, and she just takes a sharpie and makes a dot on the hair everytime she comes in for a groom, just to be safe, LOL. If they are worried about the warts getting knicked, maybe the would be willing to take 20 mintues before, and do this for you? Razz
