Hope you can HELP injured dog
I am not a groomer but a desperate owner. Hopefully someone in the grooming business can help me. Long story short my dog, an Aussie (Large) has extensive nerve damage to his front left leg. As a result he has no feeling in his paw and drags it (bent under) when we walk. He has worn two of his nails down past the quick causing them to bleed. Thankfully it is not painful but I am concerned about infection etc. I have tried various boots, socks and the like, but they will not stay on. At the moment all I can do is tape the nail with duct tape. It does work but not in the wet and not for longer walks as the tape wears downs on the concrete. I have been looking at "soft claws" - nail caps. Is anyone familiar with these? Do you think they would withstand being rubbed along the sidewalk? Do you know of anyplace in the Toronto, GTA area I find them? If in your business you have come across a dog with the same problem I would appreciate hearing what the owners have used to protect the nails.
Thanks.
Thanks.

You can order Soft Claws directly from the manufacturer (http://www.softclaws.net/chart.asp). Rens Pet Supply carries the cat ones, but their (very bad) new website makes it hard to tell if they also carry the dog sizes. I would also suggest vet wrap instead of duct tape. There used to be a style of boot that had a high sock with straps on each that met on the back in an X so that the boots could not be lost.

Re: Hope you can HELP injured dog
Thanks! I went to Global Pets and they are going to order the softclaws for me. I have tried the vet wrap but it catches on the concrete and pulls off. I am going to look at some dog splints next week and see if there is something that will keep his paw in it's proper position.
Thanks for you help. I'll let you know how it works out.

One of my groomers tried using the soft claws on her weimeraner. After a while from her walking/running around, her nail actually wore through the cap, defeating the purpose of having them on. She felt they were a total waste of money. Is your dogs injury permanent? If it is, what about amputation? I agree with stephanie, try vet wrap over duct tape.
