greasy ears and coat

Post by Ohmydog on December 13th 2007, 11:39 pm

I have some dogs that come in with chronic bad ears and greasy hair. I use oxyfresh to clean the ears and baby wipes. I've tried de-greasing shampoo on the hair, also corn starch and also tried dish soap. surprisingly dish soap works the best, and then washing with regular soap. What do you all use?

I always use dish soap on greasy ears. It is the only product, I have found, that gets the grease out. This is what was used in the shop where I went to grooming school. I was never told to use anything different, but I know a lot of groomers don't like the idea of using dish soap.

I also use dish soap on greasy ears, as long as you dont use it to bath the dog, I dont see anything wrong with that. sunlight seem to work the best. Many years ago i took over a dog salon only to find out she was washing dogs with ivory dish soap....geeezzz

While I do from time to time use dish soap for greasy ears or beards I would never use it as a regular shampoo! Dogs skin can be very sensitive and their PH is completly different from ours. There are plenty of good inexpensive dog shampoos on the market that could easily be used instead of dish soap. Is this a regular grooming salon or ?

Dish soap is very harsh on their skin and coat and I find greasy coats are usually a result of an underling skin problem/allergy. I get dogs like this who's owners bring in Tar and Sulfur shampoo or a sensitive skin shampoo like Oatmeal from the vets to use on them. I use a sensitive skin shampoo on problem skin dogs and shampoo as many times as is needed until the grease is gone.

I don't use dish soap on greasy dogs or cats. I use F&T degreaser from Les Pooches. The best stuff I've tried.

I do use diluted dish soap for skunked dogs! Works well!

I've heard that Les Pooch degreaser is amazing stuff.. not in my budget though. I usually use dirty dog shampoo, but if they're really bad I'll add a drop of palmolive. Like the rest, haven't found anything else as good.
